In practice

Metaphors compress meaning: calling a difficult relationship "a slow leak" says more in four words than a paragraph of explanation could. Because metaphors ask the listener to connect two ideas themselves, they tend to feel more vivid and personal than literal statements, and they can carry a song's central idea in a single memorable phrase, often in the hook.

A metaphor works best when it is sustained rather than scattered—picking one central image and following its logic through a verse or chorus, instead of mixing several unrelated metaphors in the same section, which can confuse the picture a listener is building.

Example

A co-writer suggests calling a fading friendship 'a porch light left on for a house nobody visits anymore.' The pair builds the whole chorus around that single image rather than adding a second, unrelated metaphor, so the comparison stays clear and the idea lands.
