In practice

Where a metaphor says one thing is another, a simile says one thing is like another, which can make the comparison feel more conversational and easier to follow on a first listen. Lines such as "steady as a porch swing" or "quiet like a classroom after the bell" give a listener a quick, familiar reference point for an unfamiliar feeling.

Because similes announce themselves with "like" or "as," a lyric that relies on too many in a row can start to sound like a list of comparisons rather than a scene. Many writers use one strong simile per section and let imagery carry the rest of the description.

Example

In a verse about nerves before a first gig, a writer tries the line 'my hands shook like a screen door in a storm.' The simile gives a familiar, physical comparison that makes the nervousness easy to picture without over-explaining it.
