In practice
Unlike a full music score, which notates every instrument's part, a lead sheet gives just enough information—melody line, chord symbols above the staff, and lyrics underneath—for a musician to play or sing the song in their own style. This makes lead sheets practical for rehearsals, auditions, or sharing a song with a musician who wasn't part of writing it.
Lead sheets are especially useful for musicians who read music but don't need or want a fixed arrangement, since the chord symbols leave room for the performer to interpret voicings, rhythm, and instrumentation themselves. Many working musicians keep a personal book of lead sheets for songs they perform regularly.
Example
Before hiring a session pianist for a showcase, a songwriter prepares a lead sheet with the melody notated above chord symbols and the lyrics written underneath each phrase. The pianist, who has never heard the song before, is able to play a convincing arrangement from the lead sheet alone at the first rehearsal.
