In practice
Demos exist to capture an idea clearly enough for others—or a future version of the same writer—to understand what the song is meant to sound like, without requiring the time or cost of a full studio production. A demo might be as simple as a phone recording of voice and guitar, or as developed as a home-recorded version with basic drums, bass, and keys standing in for a future full arrangement.
Demos are commonly used to pitch a song to an artist, publisher, or collaborator, or simply to keep a record of a song before details are forgotten. Because a demo is meant to communicate an idea rather than be a finished product, writers generally don't worry about perfect performances or polished sound when recording one.
Example
After finishing a new song on guitar, a writer records a quick demo on her phone, singing the melody and playing the chords straight through without stopping for mistakes. She sends that rough demo to a bandmate so he can learn the song before their next rehearsal.
