In practice
Rhythm is one of music's three fundamental elements alongside melody and harmony, and it exists independently of pitch: a rhythm can be clapped or spoken with no notes at all. In songwriting, rhythm shapes both the instrumental groove and the way lyrics are delivered, since the syllables of a lyric naturally fall into rhythmic patterns against the music.
Beginning songwriters often focus first on melody and chords, but paying attention to rhythm, how long notes are held, where accents fall, and how phrases breathe, can be just as powerful for making a song memorable. A strong rhythmic idea, like a distinctive strum pattern or vocal cadence, can carry a song even with simple harmony.
Example
A verse melody uses short, clipped syllables that bounce quickly across the beat, while the chorus stretches the same words into longer, sustained notes, giving the two sections contrasting rhythmic energy.
