In practice
Meter gives a listener a sense of pulse and grouping, letting them anticipate where the next strong beat will land. Common meters group beats in twos, threes, or fours, and that underlying grouping shapes how a melody or lyric naturally phrases itself. A waltz's three-beat meter feels very different from a march's steady four-beat meter, even at a similar tempo.
For songwriters, meter is usually expressed through a time signature at the top of a lead sheet, but the feel of meter is something a listener senses even without reading music, through where the accents and chord changes land. Choosing an unconventional meter can make a song feel unusual or off-balance in a way that supports an unusual lyric or mood.
Example
A songwriter writes a lullaby-style verse in a gentle triple meter, so each measure feels like a slow rock from one strong beat to two softer ones, matching the swaying imagery in the lyric.
