In practice
Being 'in the pocket' means a performer's timing locks naturally with the rest of the band, whether that means landing exactly on the beat, slightly ahead of it for urgency, or slightly behind it for a laid-back feel. The pocket isn't about rigid mechanical accuracy; it's about a consistent, intentional relationship to the beat that feels good and repeatable.
Songwriters and producers often talk about finding the pocket together with a drummer or bassist, adjusting small timing choices until the groove feels settled rather than rushed or dragging. A song can have correct notes and chords yet still feel wrong if the pocket isn't right.
Example
A bass player experiments with playing each note a touch behind the drummer's kick, and once they find that slightly delayed pocket, the whole groove suddenly feels relaxed instead of stiff.
