In practice

Even songs that are only a few minutes long can follow a simple story shape: an opening situation, a turn or complication, and some kind of resolution or realization by the final section. Verses often carry the forward motion of the story, while the chorus repeats the song's emotional center, acting almost like a narrator stepping back to comment on events rather than advancing them.

Not every song needs a tight plot, but giving listeners a sense of movement—something changes, is learned, or is decided between the first verse and the last—keeps a lyric from feeling static. Writers sometimes map out a one-line summary of each verse before drafting lyrics, to check that the story actually goes somewhere.

Example

A writer sketches a three-verse arc: verse one shows two friends packing up a shared apartment, verse two flashes back to how they first met, and verse three returns to the empty rooms after the friend has driven away. Mapping that arc before writing any lines keeps each verse doing a distinct job in the story.
