In practice

Rhyme works by matching the vowel and following consonant sounds of words, so that 'light' and 'night' rhyme because they share the same ending sound even though they're spelled differently. In songwriting, rhyme helps signal the end of a line or phrase to a listener's ear, reinforcing the song's structure even before the words' meaning fully registers.

Beginning lyricists often reach for perfect rhymes first, but relying only on the most obvious rhyming word can push a lyric toward clichés. Learning to balance rhyme with natural phrasing, sometimes choosing a near rhyme or skipping a rhyme altogether, keeps lyrics sounding conversational rather than forced.

Example

A verse pairs the lines 'I left my coat out in the rain' and 'forgot how cold this town became,' rhyming 'rain' and 'became' only loosely while keeping the phrasing natural and unforced.
