In practice
Knowing a song's key tells a musician which notes and chords will feel natural, or diatonic, and which will stand out as exceptions. A key is named for its tonic, so a song in the key of E minor treats the E minor chord and scale as its home base, the point of greatest rest that other chords lead toward and away from.
For a beginning songwriter, choosing a key is often a practical decision tied to vocal range or instrument tuning, but it also shapes mood: some keys feel brighter or heavier simply through association and the specific chord shapes they invite on a given instrument. Changing a song's key, called transposition, keeps all the relationships between notes the same while shifting the overall pitch up or down.
Example
A songwriter writes a demo in the key of A major to suit a guitar capo, then transposes the whole song down to F major for a singer with a lower range, keeping every chord and melodic interval identical.
